Richard Bell's nature sketchbook since 1998
Cauliflowers are ideal subjects for me to practice drawing as I attempt to get my right hand back in full working order.
These, drawn in Adobe Fresco on my iPad, were some that I photographed at a greengrocers in Les Halles, when we visited Paris last month.
Cauliflowers featured in Léon Lhermitte’s monumental painting of the market at Les Halles, on display at Le Petit Palais.
The original Collins Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe included bird names in Dutch, French, German and Swedish. The rose-ringed parakeet didn’t get a mention in my 1967 edition. Since then its made itself at home in Paris and on just one occasion we watched a pair briefly visit our bird feeders.

Happy birthday to Richard, who’s so lucky to have such interesting Metro stations around him in Paris. We have to make do with Finsbury Park, Mornington Crescent and Crouch End. But Harry Hill, the I’m Sorry, I haven’t a Clue team and Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg have made the most of those three, although Crouch End was a fictional tube station, featuring in Shaun of the Dead.
